My Lover

My lover touches children’s faces on the train without asking. “Kawaii,” he says. His friend’s wife serves tea and mikan while the men talk for hours. A little girl plays quietly on the tatami. Afterwards, my lover says, “We could get married,” and I say, “Yes. But we won’t.”
